ErdeneZuu

Kharkhorin

Chinggis Khan’s fabled city was founded in 1220 and it was from there that the Mongol Empire was governed for 40 years until the capital was moved to Beijing. In the subsequent collapse of the Mongolian empire, Karakorum was abandoned and then destroyed by Manchu soldiers in 1388. Most traces of the original city have vanished except for the most unique remains of two giant stone tortoises, which used to hold inscribed stele (stone tablets). The ruins of the city’s bricks and stones were used to help build the glorious Erdene Zuu Monastery in the 16th century. This important temple survived the communist era and carpenters especially will be fascinated to see the temples built without the use of a single nail. The wall has 108 stupas, each for a special event, some containing the remains of important lamas. The Golden stupa, built in 1799, contains 100000 different Buddha’s and 55070 Bodhisuburgan. With the advent of democracy in 1990 Erdene Zuu has become an active monastery again where visitors are asked to respect the sacred nature of this place of worship.

Hustai

Hustai National Park

The Hustai National Park protected area lies 100km southwest of Ulaanbaatar and was established in 1993 to preserve Mongolia’s wild takhi (przewalski’s) horses and the environment in which they live. The takhi horse is unique to Mongolia where it existed until the 1960s. It is believed these horses have direct genetic links to perhistoric horses. After the sad extinction of the takhi horses in the wild, these beautiful animals have been reintroduced from captivity and they have taken well to their new freedom. They are not particularly afraid of humans and the harems (one stallion and several mares) are known to come quite close if visitors are quiet and calm.

This trip is a once in a life time chance to see these prehistoric animals up close. With a guide from the National Park visitors are able to follow the takhi horses and see them living in their true habitat. If very lucky, you may catch a glimps of one of the very shy baby horses that stay close to their mothers. Visitors can also view the fantasitc rolling hills of the steppe and enjoy a peaceful walk or horse trek along the river. Guests can stay overnight in a snug Mongolian Ger (yurt) and enjoy a slower pace of life with a local family, helping them to fetch water, gather fuel for the fire and herd their animals. If you are here at the right time of year you many also be able to milk a horse and try some fermented milk, a local delicacy!

Ger District Tour

Are you interested to see how the other half lives? Would you like a sneak preview into the lives of “real” Mongolian’s? We are offering a tour to one of the ger districts of Ulaanbaatar with a local guide.

Leave from the guesthouse with one of our guides who live in the ger district. If you chose you can take public transport to one of the suburbs of the city, or if you prefer we can provide a car. Our guide will show you some of the main features of the ger district where there is no running water, so families must collect their own water. Coal is used to cook and heat homes. You may be able to visit some of the local residents and be invited in for some Mongolian milk tea.

ger district

The ger districts are safe during the day, but we advise everyone to take the usual precautions. There are pick-pockets and opportunists all over the city, as in any country. Also, please be wary of dogs. In the ger districts dogs are strictly working animals used as guard dogs. Please do not approach any dog.

Package price in USD, per person:

  • 1-2 persons: 50 USD
  • 3 or more persons: 40 USD

Included: excursion as per itinerary, guide service with local resident and all transfers.
